Lake County Organizations Highlight New Digital Support Tools During Problem Gambling Awareness Month

LAKE ZURICH -- Community health providers and state officials are encouraging Lake County residents to learn more about the warning signs of gambling addiction and available treatment resources as Illinois observes Problem Gambling Awareness Month throughout March.

The annual campaign, coordinated by the Illinois Department of Human Services, aims to raise awareness about problem gambling while connecting residents with confidential support services. This year’s outreach includes a new partnership introducing a mobile app designed to help individuals track their gambling behavior and access help more easily.

State officials say the new collaboration with the behavioral health technology company Evive brings digital support tools directly to people’s phones, making it easier for residents in suburban communities like those across Lake County to seek assistance privately.

The Evive mobile app allows users to monitor gambling habits, access mental health resources, and connect with treatment providers if they decide they need help. The tool is part of the state’s broader “Are You Really Winning?” awareness campaign, which encourages people to evaluate how gambling may be affecting their lives.

According to state research, gambling addiction affects a significant number of Illinois residents. Officials estimate that roughly 400,000 people statewide have a gambling disorder, while another 700,000 residents are considered at risk of developing one.

Those statistics underscore the importance of outreach in suburban communities where gambling options—including video gaming terminals, sports wagering, and lottery play—are widely available in restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.

Over the past five years, Illinois has expanded its treatment network significantly. More than 950 clinicians have been trained to provide specialized gambling disorder treatment, helping ensure that residents in regions like Lake County have access to professional care.

In State Fiscal Year 2025 alone, providers conducted more than 64,000 gambling screenings and assessments, demonstrating both the scale of the issue and the growing awareness of available help.

Throughout March, the state is also promoting education through community outreach, public awareness campaigns, and a statewide art contest focused on recovery and hope. Buildings in downtown Chicago will be illuminated in teal as a symbol of support for people working to overcome gambling addiction.
