Patch Passport: A Little Bit of Paradise at Spa Soma
Editor Korrina Grom gets pampered at Spa Soma in Lake Zurich.
When it comes to pampering myself, the most I usually do is go to the Hair Cuttery in Gurnee for a cut and style.
On the rare occasion (okay, twice) that I've gotten a manicure, I wasn't too pleased with the results. My poor nails fail to hold the color for too long, often chipping the very next day - whether self-done or professionally-painted. I've never had a pedicure - my feet are way too ticklish - and I've never had a massage.
So, given my obvious lack of pampering experiences, you'll be surprised to hear that I went to Spa Soma, 303 N. Rand Road, for a 30-minute mini-facial!
I had no idea what to expect and was nervous, despite the presence of my trusted sidekick (and Patch freelancer) Angela Sykora. As soon as we walked in, we were offered glasses of wine - which we politely declined because we were, of course, working. (Tough job, but somebody's gotta do it, right?)
Esthetician Julie Stewart showed me to a spa room, where I donned a towel cover-up and laid on a comfy bed in preparation for my brief - yet extremely relaxing - facial. Soothing music played in the background while Julie used a gentle cleanser to wash away my make-up. Julie then used a Clarisonic brush to thoroughly clean and exfoliate my skin.
What followed was a variety of treatments: an anti-aging vitamin C serum; a clay mask to remove impurities from my skin; and a super-moisturizing lip balm. In between treatments, Julie placed a hot towel on my face, which was really nice even though it was about 95 degrees outside.
She also took the time to massage my arms and hands, which was very relaxing.
As I'm writing this, it's been a full day since my mini-facial. My skin has never felt so smooth or looked so radiant! All this for just $45. I might have to do this more often!
