Silverado Senior Living Grand Opening Thursday

An Alzheimer's futurist will speak at the grand opening event.

Alzheimer’s futurist Loren Shook will share his vision of changing the world for those with memory-impairing diseases when he comes to Lake Zurich this month. Co-author of an award-winning book on the subject, Shook will participate in the grand opening of Silverado Senior Living – Lake Zurich, from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at 555 America Court. Lake Zurich Village President Suzanne Branding is among the area dignitaries expected to take part in the event. It is free and open to the public; in order to attend, it is necessary to RSVP to 224-286-1751.

Shook, president of Silverado Senior Living, is co-author of The Silverado Story: A Memory-Care Culture Where Love is Greater than Fear. The book details the innovations that have been Silverado’s core practices since he founded the memory-care organization 15 years ago. They include the lack of physical and pharmaceutical restraints, an average reduction of 50 percent in residents’ prescription drug use, exercise, and the active role of children and pets.

These approaches are designed to enable each person to live to his or her full capacity and help slow the disease’s progression. More than 3,900 memory-impaired people have regained the ability to walk and over 2,400 have become able to feed themselves again while in Silverado’s care. The Silverado Story has received honors from the Independent Book Publisher Awards, the Los Angeles Book Festival and other organizations.

“With so many people in the region affected by the disease now, and the even greater impact anticipated for the future, it’s important that everyone involved in this issue work together to provide meaningful care for the individual and resources and support for their families,” Shook said. “I am looking forward to meeting others in the Lake Zurich area who are concerned about this topic.”

“We’re excited about welcoming the greater community into ours to celebrate Silverado’s opening in Lake Zurich on October 13,” said Pamela Preston Bradley, M.S., administrator of Silverado Senior Living – Lake Zurich. The community has 128 memory-care licensed beds as part of the four-cottage property design.

Silverado Senior Living, based in Irvine, CA, operates memory-care communities in Illinois, California, Texas, Arizona and Utah. It also offers home care, care management and hospice care through its Silverado At Home and Silverado Hospice service lines, for a total of 34 operating locations.

Silverado Senior Living’s website is www.SilveradoSenior.com. A live internet chat line offered through the site and a toll-free phone line enable the public to obtain information and assistance with the organization’s services and referral to other resources at any time of day or night.
