Trustees Approve Police Contract, Table Fireworks Vote

Here's a look at some of the items discussed by the at its April 2 meeting:
Police Union Contract Ratified
Trustees unanimously ratified the agreement between the village and the Fraternal Order of Police Lake Zurich Lodge 190, effective July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014. The contract includes the following salary increases: 1.5 percent on July 1, 2011; .5 percent on Jan. 1, 2012; 2 percent on July 1, 2012; and 2 percent on July 1, 2013.

Special Use Permit Issued for Used Merchandise Store
Trustees unanimously approved a special use permit for a used merchandise store, Savers, at 945 S. Rand Road in the Deerpath Commons shopping center. The store will sell items such as used clothing.

Dan Peterson, director of building and zoning, said the business must comply with two conditions identified by the plan commission, including: the sidewalk and amenities must be returned to their original conditions should the site be vacated; and the petitioner, John Alan Sfire, must work with village staff on acceptable signs and traffic control for the drop-off area.
Fireworks Contract Tabled
Trustees tabled their vote on the bid award for the July 4 fireworks display. While village staff solicited 10 potential vendors for bids, the village received just one bid from J&M Displays for $15,000. Staff recommended that trustees approve this bid. J&M Displays has done the village's fireworks displays since 2009.
Interim Village Administrator Roy Witherow said that minutes before the board meeting Monday night, Trustees Tom Poynton and Jeff Halen said they noticed that the amount of shells per dollar has dropped by 40 percent.
"The devil is in the details," Witherow said of the contract. He added that he would like to rebid the fireworks contract and try to "get β¦ a better bang for our buck."
Eagle Scout Honored
The board issued a proclamation honoring Lake Zurich resident Kieran E. Groble, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Groble is a member of Boy Scout Troop 964 and attends the Illinois Math and Science Academy, said Mayor Suzanne Branding.
Branding read the proclamation, which states that Groble "has demonstrated the perseverance necessary to reach the goal of Eagle Scout" and "shown the leadership qualities necessary to perform the duties associated with being an Eagle Scout."
