300-Plus Flights Canceled, Power Outages Reported Amid IL Storms

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 1 p.m. Sunday for most of northern Illinois.

ILLINOIS — Sunday has already proven to be an active weather day as severe storms roll into the area. Hundreds of flights have been canceled out of Chicago due to the storms. At O'Hare, 354 flights were canceled, and 42 were canceled at Midway as of 9:30 a.m. ComEd was also reporting more than 27,000 customers with power outages across the state as of just after 9 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 p.m. Sunday for Boone, Bureau, Carroll, Cook, DuPage, DeKalb, Grundy, Henry, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, La Salle, Lee, McHenry, Mercer, Ogle, Putnam, Rock Island, Stephenson, Whiteside,

Several towns have already had severe thunderstorm warnings. The southwest suburbs were under a warning on Sunday morning, and the NWS said wind damage was reported in Darien with downed tree limbs due to the storms.

Thunderstorms are expected to continue into early Sunday afternoon. According to the NWS, the storms will be strong, occasionally severe, as it moves through northern Illinois. Large hail and strong winds are the main threats, along with brief heavy downpours with localized flooding.
