Cantores Community Choir is celebrating 15 years of singing and performing in Downers Grove with their upcoming Spring concert cycle. Started in 2011 by Artistic Director Dr. Belford Hernandez and Business Manager Don Dunham, Cantores grew out of a need for singing to build up the community. The group started with 17 brave singers, and has grown to over 50 members from all walks of life and all levels of musical skill.
To celebrate 15 years of music-making, Cantores Community Choir is performing May 2nd and 3rd in a program entitled "Why We Sing." The program includes a commissioned piece by local composer Brian D. York, a salute to America 250 with a stirring arrangement of "America, The Beautiful," and a medley of tunes from "West Side Story." Included are special performances from the Kelly Snyder Memorial Vocal Scholarship winners, high school seniors Jurate Davies and Marley Birch.
The program at both upcoming Cantores Community Choir concerts will be the same, and you have two opportunities--Saturday, May 2nd Concert at 4:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (4501 Main Street, Downers Grove); and Sunday, May 3rd Concert at 4:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (1032 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove).
Cantores Community Choir's concerts are always completely free and open to the public. Donations are applied toward future projects and their scholarship fund. For more information, please visit their website, www.cantorescc.org.
