'Scouting Has Offered Me So Much': Lemont Teen Earns Rank Of Eagle Scout

LEMONT, IL — Lemont resident Katie Chuchla has officially earned the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award, her family shared with Patch.

Katie achieved Eagle Scout rank in May, after starting her involvement with Scouts in 2018.

To achieve Eagle Scout, you must earn at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate strong leadership and lead a community service project. For her service project, Katie designed and managed the creation and installation of a new outdoor sign at St. Al's/St. Pat's School.

Katie told Patch that Scouting has become her favorite activity over the years.

"Scouting has offered me so much, from new friendships to fantastic new experiences. I find myself being able to do things the others only dream about," she said.

Katie is currently the Senior Patrol Leader of Scouts BSA Troop 49. Throughout her time in Scouts, she has also served as patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and quartermaster. Katie has also completed both National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Leadership Seminar (NLS).

"I wouldn't be the confident young leader I am today without Scouting America," Katie said.

She has earned the National Outdoor Achievement Award, and has accumulated 118 nights of camping. She is also passionate about public lands, and has earned the National Park Service Scout Ranger Award.

After graduating from high school, Katie plans to explore aviation and pursue a career in wildland firefighting.

A member of the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of the Brotherhood honor, Katie serves as the Vice Chief for the Tall Grass Chapter of Takhone Lodge and remains active on the lodge's ceremony team.
