Weaving Evolution

From looms to woven garments and art

On October 14, 2026, in partnership with the Homer Township Public Library, the Lemont Artists Guild is pleased to present, at the library, multi-talented and award winning Fiber Artist, Betty Burian Kirk, who will talk about Weaving and its evolution. Betty will give a historic overview of weaving, followed by an explanation of the development of looms. Then she will show woven art pieces from utilitarian use to art expression. Betty will have various woven samples on display as well as her floor loom which she will use to demonstrate weaving. PLEASE REGISTER AT: https://www.homerlibrary.org/weaving2026

Betty studied art at Northern Illinois University where she earned a Bachelor's and Master's in Art Education. She taught grade school art and also weaving at Joliet Junior College. She now teaches at regional and national fiber conferences, workshops at local guilds, and sells her handmade wearable fiber art at art shows in Illinois. Her knowledge in the fiber arts is extensive. Her many talents include weaving, spinning, ribbon flowers, tassels, Japanese bookbinding and braiding (Kumihimo).
