Spartans Hockey Club - Formerly Known As Trojan Hockey

Lemont HS hockey - change is in the air.

Change is in the air and the hockey club is going through some big changes as the 2012-2013 season approaches.  There have been alterations made in the league we play in as well as within our own team.

First, you may have noticed, from the title, that our team name has changed.  AHAI, the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois, which is the governing board for all of youth hockey in Illinois, worked on a re-alignment of all of the High School hockey teams this summer.  The purpose behind it was to bring High School teams back together in a more regional and district-friendly affiliation.  As a result, our previous relationship with Downers Grove North has come to an end.  They will now play with Downers South and Hinsdale South, which makes sense.
The removal of that club opened up the opportunity for us to merge with Lockport High School.  With the Trojan name affiliated with DG North, a new team name for our club was necessary.

Another big change is in coaching.  The merger with Lockport will bring an equal
number of players from both schools.  Taking this factor in mind, it was decided that bringing in a new coach who had no affiliation with either school was the best option going forward.  Steve Somerfield was signed on as the new Varsity Head Coach.  He was recently the Varsity Head Coach for Lincolnway (East/North) and has 10+ years of coaching experience with the Orland Park Vikings.  Two Open Skates will be held in order for new and returning players to meet the coach and their potential teammates.  The first skate will be on Thursday, August 16 at 8:30 pm at Darien.  The second skate will be on Monday, August 20 at 9:30 pm at  Darien.  Players are welcome to attend both sessions.

Finally, the league we play in is going through a restructuring of sorts.  There will be four divisions now in the Illinois High School Hockey League (formerly Illinois
Suburban Hockey League).  Our team will remain in the Suburban Division and face many of the same teams we have played in the past.  With the extra divisions, however, there is now the option for 6-8 cross-division games, so we will see some new competition as well.

A new website is under construction but, in the meantime, “Like” us on Facebook to get updates on the start of the season:
