Trojan Hockey: Are You Kidding Me, Ref?

Trojans lose 4-0 vs. Guerin/Nazareth.

“Are you kidding me, Ref?” seemed to be the statement shouted out (frequently) by parents, players and coaches Sunday, Nov. 6, when the Trojan team made the trip up to Franklin Park to play Guerin/Nazareth in their sixth pre-season game.

I’m not going to try to pin our loss on the poor calls made by our officials. You cannot win a game by scoring zero goals (which we achieved). This wasn’t for
lack of effort. We had, according to the score sheet, 15 shots on goal. We also held them to 17 shots on net. So it was an evenly played game. They were just
more successful in getting the puck into the back of our net.

I am also not going to pin our loss on lopsided penalty calls made by the
officials. They called them both ways. The Trojans were called on eight offenses and Guerin/Nazareth had seven.

It was the quality of the officiating that had us talking after the game. For example, one of our players was checked into the boards but the ref put him in the box, not the opponent. Another player got a penalty, on a clean check, for head contact — not possible when the other player is a foot taller than you. That is just a sampling of the comical nature of the Sunday’s game.

The Trojans play two the weekend of Nov. 11-12. Friday’s game is away in Homewood and Saturday’s game is at home in Darien vs. Batavia at 6 p.m.
