The Trojan hockey team wrapped up the pre-season with a tie and a win over the Veterans Day holiday weekend. At the end of tiering, the Trojans are just over .500 with a record of 4-3-1.
Friday night’s game in Homewood-Flossmoor could have easily been a loss by the way the team played — flat, lackluster, tired. Actually, a couple of players looked exhausted as early as the first period.
In spite of that, the team was still able to move the puck around and put 32 shots on net with four going in. The Joe Sambucci/Bryan Roy/David Ulanski line scored and/or assisted on three of them with Mark Bryane (defense) having one of those goals.

David Ulanski earned a playmaker. Officially, the ref gave one of the assist credits to #18 which is not a player number on our team, but I’m giving it to David (his number is closest to that and he was out there at the time). Not sure how much bigger those numbers on the backs of our jerseys (and sleeves) need to be. Outside of that line, Danny Desmond had a goal (assisted by the Dirst brothers). Final score was 4-4.
Saturday’s game was a blowout. The Trojans beat Batavia 10-2. Alex Lurie had a great game, earning a hat trick. Our defense showed a strong presence, holding Batavia to only 16 shots on goal. In addition, defensemen Brian Botwinski had a goal and an assist and Tyler Zaremski had a goal.

Other goals were scored by Bryan Roy (2), Byron Graf, David Ulanski, and Kyle Millinowicz, with assists by Bryan Dirst, Ulanski, Mike Cronin, Danny Desmond, Graf, Botwinksi, and Laper.
The only lowlight of this game was another terrible call by the refs. Our player checked a Batavia player into the boards right in front of our team’s bench. Their player turned around, with both hands on his stick, and whacked our player in the head. The ref simply gave him a two minute minor for “high-sticking”. A player shouldn’t have to be seriously injured for the right call to be made.
The Trojans kick off the regular season on the road this week with a late game on Wednesday, Nov.16, in Franklin Park (vs. Leyden) and in Kankakee on Saturday, Nov. 19 (vs. Champagne/Urbana).
