Catholics Around the World Begin Holy Week with Prayer and Tradition

This week, millions of Catholics around the globe have entered into Holy Week, the most sacred period of the Church’s liturgical year. The week commemorates the final days of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry, his suffering, death, and glorious resurrection.

The solemn observance began with Palm Sunday, celebrated in churches last weekend. Worshippers held palm branches—symbols of peace and victory—as they remembered Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Many parishes hosted processions and dramatic readings of the Passion narrative from the Gospels.

As the week continues, Catholics turn their focus to a series of powerful liturgies:

• Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) recalls the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. In many parishes, the priest washes the feet of parishioners in a powerful gesture of humility and service.
• Good Friday is a solemn day of fasting, reflection, and prayer, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Churches strip their altars bare, and many hold services that include veneration of the cross and readings of the Passion.
• Holy Saturday is marked by quiet reflection, culminating in the Easter Vigil—a dramatic and joyful liturgy that includes readings from salvation history, the blessing of the new fire, baptisms, and the proclamation of the Resurrection.

Pope Francis, speaking from the Vatican, encouraged the faithful to “walk the path of Holy Week with hearts open to God’s mercy,” emphasizing the themes of compassion, forgiveness, and hope that define the season.

For Catholics, Holy Week is not just a remembrance of past events but a living journey of faith. It’s a time to pause, pray, and prepare for the joy of Easter Sunday, when the Church celebrates Christ's victory over sin and death.
