Catholics Mark the Feast of the Ascension and Christ’s Return to Heave
Feast Honors Christ's Glorious Ascension and Invites the Faithful to Live with Eyes Fixed on Heaven
In churches across the world, Catholics gathered this week to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, one of the most significant events in the Christian liturgical calendar. Observed 40 days after Easter Sunday, the feast commemorates the moment when Jesus Christ, in the presence of His disciples, ascended bodily into heaven.
According to the New Testament, particularly Acts 1:9-11, the Ascension occurred on the Mount of Olives, concluding Jesus’ earthly ministry and marking the beginning of the Church’s mission. The event not only signifies Christ's glorification but also His promise to send the Holy Spirit and to one day return in glory.
“Ascension reminds us that our faith is not only rooted in history, but in hope,” said Father Miguel Alvarez, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chicago. “It is a feast that lifts our eyes and hearts toward heaven, encouraging us to live with eternity in mind.”

In many dioceses, the feast is celebrated on the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter, commonly referred to as “Ascension Thursday.” However, in some regions, including much of the United States, the solemnity is transferred to the following Sunday to allow greater participation among the faithful.
Liturgically, the celebration includes readings that recount the event, hymns of praise, and prayers that reflect on the heavenly reign of Christ. In some cultures, traditional processions and local customs accompany the feast, emphasizing its communal and spiritual importance.
