The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter is celebrated each year on February 22 in the Catholic Church. While the title may sound unusual at first, it carries deep spiritual meaning. This feast does not primarily honor a physical chair, but rather the authority and mission entrusted to St. Peter by Christ.
In the Gospel of Matthew (16:18–19), Jesus says to Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” With these words, Christ established Peter as the visible head of the Church on earth. The “chair” symbolizes Peter’s role as shepherd, teacher, and leader of the Christian community. It represents the teaching authority passed down through apostolic succession to each pope.

A large bronze sculpture, created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, surrounds what is traditionally believed to be an ancient wooden chair associated with St. Peter. The artwork dramatically illustrates the Church’s belief in the enduring mission of Peter and his successors.
The Chair of St. Peter reminds Catholics that the Church is not simply a human institution but one founded by Christ with a clear structure and mission. It calls the faithful to pray for the Pope, for Church leaders, and for unity among all Christians.
