Chicago Blaze host Lemont's Cub Scout Pack 149's Rocket Launch at Thornley Fields.

Rugby Paddock becomes Launch Pad!

It was a beautiful morning for a Rocket Launch in Lemont Saturday, July 26, as Cub Scout Pack 149 turned the rugby paddock into a rocket launch pad.

The pack of excited future astronauts set their rockets a blaze, some skying high into our upper field, soaring almost 200 meters to it’s far goal line.

This is the third successful rocket launch the Chicago Blaze hosted Pack 149 each of the last three July’s to celebrate man’s walking on the moon July 20, 1969.

I have to say, my nephew Matt who has graduated into the Boy Scouts and Nick who has another couple of years as a Cub Scout, really enjoy their experience’s with the Scouts. This is a great way for our club to give back to the community by utilizing the open space for Lemont’s very own scouts to reach outer space.

I was able to break out the rugby ball and teach the pack how to pass the ball and let them know that I would like to have the opportunity to teach them Rookie Touch Rugby. Our goal with the Blaze in recent years has been to develop youth teams for Middle School and High School, planning a Blaze Youth Program next spring.

The launch lasted about 2 hours, then we tossed the rugby ball around and after enjoyed a good American lunch of hot dogs, snacks and refreshing lemonade.

The Pack plans on attending one of our upcoming fall matches, our home opener is August 23, vs. the Chicago Riot, kickoff at 1pm.
