Fast Facts: Lemont coach Rick Runaas calls Hillcrest the “diamond standard in our conference,” to illustrate the respect the Hawks garner. Hillcrest won the 2009-10 Class 3A state title and took third in 2011-12. They have won six regional titles and four sectional titles since the 2008-09 season. This year’s edition is very young, but still unbeaten thus far in conference play. Garrett leads the way, averaging 18.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.3 assists per game. Hillcrest coach Don Houston calls King the “heart of the team.” Stanback leads the team in rebounding as a freshman with 6.6 per game. He and Williams, both 6-foot-4, patrol the lane. Hughes is growing into his role as the team’s point guard. Houston is happy with his team’s success thus far, but he’s fighting against his team becoming complacent in the dog days of January, saying, “We are too young to be complacent.” Lemont doesn’t have the pedigree as a program that Hillcrest does. The Indians’ last regional title came in 1990-91 and they only have one sectional title ever, but this year’s team is hoping to break through. Pipes leads the way, averaging 20 points per game, and is second on the team in assists and rebounds. Wisz averages 12 points per game and averages six rebounds per game. Lemont wouldn’t mind slowing the game down and waiting for better looks, while Hillcrest is hoping to speed the game up to its preferred pace.
