Cook County Committee Denies Rezoning Of Lemont Trucking Business

The Cook County Zoning and Building Committee has rejected the rezoning of a trucking business in Lemont Township.

LEMONT, IL — The Cook County Zoning and Building Committee has denied the rezoning of a trucking business in Lemont Township. J.P. McMahon Properties, LLC, operates at 16548 and 16572 New Ave., in Lemont, and requested the business be rezoned to an I-4 Motor Freight Terminal District to construct a truck terminal property, according to board documents.

The property is currently zoned R-4, for single-family residence district. The property consists of approximately 10 acres, and is on the south side of New Avenue.

The recommendation of the zoning board of appeals was to approve the request, but the Zoning and Building Committee turned down the rezoning. Nine commissioners denied the rezoning, three voted present, and five commissioners were absent.

Lemont Township staff member Kathy Henrikson said the issue was brought to the attention of the township because residents came in, concerned about the trucking operation "in their backyards."

"[The property owners] have literally ignored our concerns about the operation there and what's going on," she said in the public comment portion of the meeting.

According to board documents, objectors included several Lemont residents, as well as Director of Emergency Management Thomas Ballard, Township Supervisor Steven Rosendahl, Village Trustee Ken McCafferty, and the village and township of Lemont.
