Snow, Sub-Freezing Temps, Heavy Rain Could Be Headed To IL

ILLINOIS — Frost and sub-freezing temperatures are expected across the area, and heavy rain is the forecast for this weekend in Illinois. Although we're still in fall, there is also a chance of a rain/snow mix on Monday, as cold air moves through the region.

The National Weather Service said there is a significant frost or freeze risk across most of the Chicago area Friday night. This will effectively end the growing season across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

Temps will be in the 50s on Saturday, with a high of 56 expected. Due to the heavy rain expected Saturday, there is also a limited flooding risk. The weather service said there will be a period of moderate to heavy rain Saturday and into Saturday night.

Rain totals of an inch or more, with isolated amounts up to 2 inches, are possible by late Saturday night. The weather service said the exact location of the heaviest rainfall is uncertain.

Sunday could creep into the 60s, and there is a high of 61 for the day. It should be partly cloudy with no rain expected.

• SATURDAY NIGHT: Rain, mainly before 1 a.m. Low around 45. East northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west northwest 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
• SUNDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. West southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
• SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38.
