Halloween Snowfall Record: Illinois Totals

The snowfall this Halloween broke the previous record by more than 3 inches.

ILLINOIS — Halloween snowfall this year broke weather records and has also made this month the second snowiest October on record in Chicago. According to the National Weather Service, the previous Oct. 31 snowfall record was .1 inches set in 2014. This year, 3.4 inches of snow was observed at O'Hare.

Suburbs across the Chicago area saw snowfall, and here are some totals from Oct. 31:

  • Des Plaines, 5 inches
  • Elgin, 3.8 inches
  • Rockford Airport, 3.7 inches
  • O'Hare, 3.4 inches
  • Elk Grove, 3.5 inches
  • Naperville, 2.9 inches
  • Carol Stream, 2.5 inches
  • Midway, 1.9 inches
  • Romeoville, .9 inches

Illinoisans also may not appreciate the fact that we only had 185 days between accumulating snow events. The weather service said between the snow in April and the early season snow, this was the sixth shortest stretch of days without snow for Chicago.
