Dangerous 100-Degree Heat Index, Chance Of Severe Storms In IL
A peak heat index near 100 degrees is predicted for most of the area; south of I-80, it could reach 103 degrees. Here's how to stay safe.
ILLINOIS — After a few days of milder temperatures in the 80s, temps will soar back up into the 90s on Wednesday, and the heat index could exceed 100 degrees in some areas. According to the National Weather Service, highs for the day are 91 in Elgin and Joliet, 90 in Chicago and 89 in Waukegan. The peak heat index, however, is even hotter with Joliet at 99 degrees, Chicago and Waukegan at 94, and Elgin at 98 degrees.
For areas south of I-80, a heat index of 100 to 103 degrees is possible.
The NWS urges residents to limit strenuous outdoor activities and to minimize sun exposure. You should stay hydrated with frequent breaks in air conditioning.

To keep yourself safe in extreme heat, ready.gov advises:
- Find air conditioning.
- Avoid strenuous activities.
- Watch for heat illness.
- Wear light clothing.
- Check on family members and neighbors.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Never leave people or pets in a closed car.

Besides the heat, there is also a slight risk for severe weather, according to the NWS. The coverage of these storms could be low, and there is uncertainty if the storms will be able to develop. Any storms that do develop have the potential to become severe.

The timing for these storms will be between 3 and 8 p.m., the NWS said. The main threats are large hail and damaging winds.
