Increase In Car Thefts In Lemont Neighborhoods: Cops

LEMONT, IL — There has been an increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles in Lemont neighborhoods. Police said thefts have recently occurred in the Covington Knolls subdivision and Kensington subdivision.

According to police, the thefts are committed by juveniles who travel the interstate system victimizing the communities close to interchanges. Thefts are common in the days leading up to the holidays.

Police said as areas become target-hardened due to residents diligently locking their vehicles, the thieves are moving inward to subdivisions where unlocked vehicles are more prevalent. The theives only target vehicles that are unlocked and they grab what is accessible. They will also occasionally steal vehicles if they find keys inside the vehicle, and utilize those stolen vehicles for their raids on the days immediately following the theft.

Police said they will be increasing presence in the neighborhoods targeted by these crews, but are asking residents to lock their vehicles, do not leave car keys inside an unattended car, and close garage doors.
