Lemont High School To Add Girls Flag Football
The IHSA began offering a state series in girls' flag football in 2024, with 154 schools participating in the inaugural year.
LEMONT, IL — At its meeting on Jan. 20, the Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education approved a proposal from school administrators to add girls’ flag football for the 2026-27 school year. With the addition of this program in Fall 2026, Lemont High School will field 27 athletic teams – 14 for girls and 13 for boys, the school said in a news release.
After several students expressed an interest in adding girls’ flag football as a competitive sport, school administrators administered a survey to freshman, sophomore and junior girls, LHS said. Nearly half of more than 300 survey respondents indicated they were somewhat interested or very interested in participating in girls’ flag football.
The IHSA began offering a state series in girls’ flag football in 2024, with 154 schools participating in the inaugural year. The number of participating schools jumped to 223 in 2025, and is expected to grow even more in 2026, according to LHS.

Lemont High School already fields teams in all 24 South Suburban Conference sports, the school said. The SSC does not yet offer girls’ flag football as a conference sport, but Lemont will become the ninth SSC institution to field a team.
School administrators expect 40 students to participate in two levels of girls’ flag football. The school soon will begin the process for hiring coaches for the program.
