Lemont High School Welcomes Nearly 50 Students to Math Honor Society

Lemont High School welcomed its fifth class of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society inductees with a brief ceremony in the school’s Board Room on October 28. A total of 49 students were honored for their excellence in mathematics.

Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society whose membership annually includes more than 100,000 students at more than 2,000 schools across the country. Mu Alpha Theta recognizes and encourages students who enjoy and excel in mathematics. Honorees are dedicated to an interest in mathematics and to developing strong scholarship in the subject.

To be eligible for induction, students must compile an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better; complete required math classes; and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or better in all math classes. Once inducted, students also must fulfill membership obligations. Lemont’s Mu Alpha Theta honorees log many volunteer hours working in the Math Center and with individual students. Members are eligible for national scholarships.

Chapter council members include seniors Misbah Chagpar, Hope Conway, Annie Ernst, Kayla Irwin, Kristen Malloy, Olivia Matthews, Katelyn Papierski and Eugene Yoon. Teachers Erin Hitchcock and Kathy Young are volunteer faculty sponsors for Lemont’s Mu Alpha Theta chapter, which inducted its first members in 2012.
