Lemont Looks To Opt Out, Cannabis Referendum Remains On Ballot

A referendum asking Lemont voters whether the village should allow a dispensary will remain on the March 17 ballot.

LEMONT, IL — The Lemont village board will hold a special board meeting Dec. 19, and an ordinance to opt out of cannabis business establishments is on the agenda. The board originally approved a temporary moratorium on dispensaries, but will now look to completely opt out.

The village said the board will continue to assess community input and will monitor the effects of the cannabis legislation once it goes into effect Jan. 1.

A referendum asking voters their opinion on allowing a cannabis dispensary in the village will remain on the ballot for the March 17 election. Depending on referendum results and the decision of the village board, the board can choose to opt in to allowing dispensaries.

The board had also approved a second referendum question regarding police pension funding, which they will now look to remove from the ballot. At the special board meeting, the board will have a vote to rescind the resolution which would have put the police pension funding question on the ballot.

“Shall the village of Lemont, in Counties of Cook, Will and DuPage, Illinois, allow the operation of a recreational cannabis (marijuana) dispensary within its jurisdiction?”

The special village board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at village hall.
