Lemont Man Marks 13 Years In US Navy
Lemont native, Tom Smith, recently marked his 13th year of service in the U.S. Navy.
LEMONT, IL — A Lemont native recently marked his 13th year of service in the U.S. Navy. Tom Smith has served in the Navy since 2006, and is a Master-at-Arms and works as a Watch commander. Smith is a graduate of Central School and Lemont High School.
Smith said as a Watch commander he manages 36 patrol officers who have duties of law enforcement, force protection and anti-terrorism.
"We are essentially the equivalent of a civilian police officer with the added duties of protecting our military counterparts and assets by thwarting any terrorist attacks," Smith said.

While they are at sea, the officers enforce rules and regulations and maintain order, as well as defending the shop against all waterborne attacks.
Smith said his past 13 years in the military have been some of the most rewarding, as well as the most difficult experiences of his life.

"I decided to join for the experience, discipline and desire to be apart of something bigger than myself," Smith said.
Smith met his wife, Antonella, while he was stationed in Naples, Italy. They have two children, Tommy and Ara.
