Lemont Participates In Holiday Fire Safety Program

If a fire occurs as a result of a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace a red bulb on the wreath.

LEMONT, IL — Lemont Fire Protection District and Lemont IAFF 3966 are participating in "Keep The Wreath Red," which encourages residents to practice holiday fire safety. According to the village, these wreaths will be lit with red bulbs, 24 hours a day, until Jan. 2. If a fire occurs as a result of a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace a red bulb on the wreath.

Some ways to practice holiday fire safety include:

  • Use decorations made of fire resistive materials.
  • Be sure light strings are in good shape. Replace damaged strings.
  • Take care not to overload electrical outlets
  • If you use a real Christmas tree, make sure it is fresh and keep it well watered.
  • Candles should be kept away from other combustible decorations, in secure holders, and extinguished when leaving the home or retiring for the night.
  • Check around the house after a party. Make sure all smoking materials are extinguished and disposed of properly.
