Lemont Township Hosted Building Dedication Earth Day Event

Lemont Township hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in conjunction with Earth Day. The celebration was primarily for the re-dedication of the Community Center building and the new addition that was completed in November of 2024. The outgoing Township Clerk, Barb Buschman, had the honor of cutting the red ribbon.

In addition to Township Supervisor Michael Shackel, officials in attendance at the ribbon cutting included a few township alumni staff, Highway Commissioner Mark Labno, newly elected Lemont Township Clerk Christine Zielke, Township Trustee Terry Lemming, Township Trustee Debby Blatzer, outgoing Trustee Jeanette Virgillo, Village Trustee Ron Stapleton, Fire District Chief Tasso, School District 113A and current Township staff.

The Township Supervisor, Michael Shackel said, “The new addition was always in our original improvement plan for the township community center. All our administrative operations are now under one roof. We no longer need to maintain two building locations which will ultimately save the Lemont taxpayers in the long run.” Those in attendance were treated to some cocktails and appetizers provided by Mama D’s Lemont. It was a lovely reception, and the township is super grateful for those who came out to commemorate this occasion.

During the event, the Lemont Township, by honoring Earth Day, also launched their 2025 Monarch Butterfly Initiative. In partnership with Pizzo & Associates (the prairie stewardship service of the almost 60 acres behind the center) they will be creating designated pollinator gardens along the Butterfly Walking Trail in the Woodland Sanctuary.

Small packets of pollinator seeds will be available at the township office for residents to pick up for free. Those residents that choose to participate, will help spread seeds along the trails and attract butterflies and other pollinators to our Woodland Sanctuary. Protect. Preserve. Keep it beautiful!
