Lemont Township Human Services Department and How We can help you

As you may have heard, Lemont Township has a new Human Services Director and we have been making a few changes. I wanted to take the time to introduce myself and allow for the community to get to know myself and my background. My name is Stephanie Covarrubias, and I graduated from Eastern Illinois University and have a bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a focus in Family Services. Upon graduation I began working for a private agency of DCFS where I did permanency casework. I stayed in this field for about 5 years. I then began working for CEDA in the Family Support and Community Engagement Department for 4.5 years as a Program Specialist. I have a passion for helping people and want to see people strive and be able to make better choices for themselves.

The mission of Lemont Township Human Services Department is to provide assistance to disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals and families. While promoting self-sufficiency and alleviating crisis situations, we safeguard the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our township’s residents by responding with the best use of available resources.

Working with Lemont Township, we want to ensure we am giving every person who comes to see me the necessary tools to learn from they have done in the past and knowing what they have done in the past may or may not have worked. We want them to be able to push forward and make their situations better.

Within the department we are able to offer financial assistance to those who have a hardship which has developed primarily within the last 6 months. In order to qualify, you must fill out the General Assistance Application and turn in all requested documentation. If you have zero income, you may qualify for General Assistance, if you have income you may qualify for Emergency Assistance. We can primarily assist with rent, utilities, and other essentials.

The township is also offering financial assistance through the Salvation Army. With this assistance, the hardship must have occurred within the last 6 months, however there are no income guidelines. We also began implementing the Nicor Sharing program to assist with your gas bill.

The township also partners with Bethany Lutheran Church and Lemont United Methodist Church to offer a food pantry to our local residents. Pick up is one time a month from both pantries and you must qualify to attend the pantry.

We are also committed to working with our seniors and offering a variety of programs. There is a senior lunch program every day at the Community Center, lunch costs $3.00. The Café is opened from10-2 and lunch is served at 11:30AM. At this time, there is also BINGO offered on Mondays.

We work liaison with the Lemont Police Department, Pathlights (formally known as PLOWS), The Community Service Council, Lemont Lions Club, Lemont Knights of Columbus, Lemont Junior Women’s Club, AARP, Age Options, CEDA (Community and Economic Development Association), Secretary of State, Cook County Sheriff, Lemont Park District, and Lemont S.A.L.T. (Seniors And Law enforcement Together) as well as School District 113a and School District 210.
