Lemont Wrestling Sends 7 to State

Six Lemont wrestlers won individual sectional titles and seven Indians will head to state as individuals.

LEMONT, IL - The Lemont High School wrestling program had its most triumphant day ever over the weekend at the IHSA Class 2A Thornridge Sectional, where the team advanced seven wrestlers to the 2017 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals.

Seniors Egan Berta and Jake Kirkman became the first wrestlers in school history to earn four individual state finals berths; senior Damyen Gothard reached the state finals for the second straight season; and senior Jack Leffler, junior Alex Oruna and freshmen Grant LaDuke and Kyle Schickel all clinched their first state finals trips, according to a news release from the school.

The Indians as a team was also successful in 2017, winning the South Suburban Conference Blue title and winning the IHSA regional. They will square off with Brother Rice in the IHSA Class 2A Oak Forest Dual Team Sectional on Feb. 21, with the winner advancing to the IHSA Class 2A Dual Team State Finals on Feb. 25.

The seven wrestlers who advanced to state as individuals will will compete from February 16-18 at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.
