LHS Honors December Students Of The Month

LEMONT, IL — Four Lemont High School students were honored with December Student of the Month accolades at the district’s Board of Education meeting on Dec. 18. The honorees were senior Emma Potts (Social Studies), junior Michael Nunzio (Learning Resource Center), sophomore Katie Jabaay (English) and freshman Michael Doyle (Industrial Technology).

LHS said, each month, it honors a student from each grade level for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school’s various departments from month to month. Only 32 students earn “Student of the Month” accolades each school year, with four individuals honored each month from October through May. Students may be selected for this prestigious honor only once in their careers at Lemont High School.

According to the school, local businessman Brad Grcevic, of Edward Jones, Inc., contributes a donation each month to a charity selected by the Student of the Month award winners. This month’s winners selected SOS Children’s Villages to receive the donation.

• Michael Doyle, Freshman, Industrial Technology

The Industrial Technology Department picked Michael Doyle as the Freshman Student of the Month. Doyle lists Integrated Math II Honors and Orientation to Industrial Technology as his favorite classes. He is a member of the Interact Club and Student Council, and also is part of the football and wrestling programs. LHS said Doyle is described as a student who is courteous to his classmates and is lauded by his teachers for the top-notch work that he produces in class. He demonstrates quiet leadership, and has a genuine interest in whatever challenge is set before him. He hopes to finish with a grade point average of better than 4.0, and has his sights set on studying engineering in college. While much of his time is dedicated to sports or homework, Doyle also enjoys playing games with his brother and sleeping.

• Katie Jabaay, Sophomore, English

Katie Jabaay was tabbed as the Sophomore Student of the Month by the English Department. A high honor roll performer, Jabaay’s favorite subjects thus far in high school have been mathematics and biology. LHS said her teachers note that she provides invaluable insight during classroom discussion, viewing issues from multiple perspectives while challenging her peers to do the same. Her written work is described as well beyond that of a typical student her age. Jabaay plays tennis year-round, dances with the Elite Studio of Dance, and is a member of the Interact Club, Health Occupations Student Association and Student Council. She recently earned induction into Mu Alpha Theta as well. Jabaay hopes to pursue studies in neuroscience and attend medical school. She enjoys drawing, singing, reading and movies in her spare time.

• Michael Nunzio, Junior, Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center named Michael Nunzio as the Junior Student of the Month. Nunzio is a high honor roll student who most enjoys digital art and his work as a member of the school’s Technology Help Desk. His passion for graphic design along with his savvy technology skills make him a terrific addition to the Help Desk. He is professional, friendly and calm with all customers, serving them with a smile. Nunzio is a member of the Film Club, consistently sharpens his skills in the areas of animation, graphic design and web design, and has been featured in local and state art competitions. He aims to expand his influence as an artist, designer and programmer, and hopes to publish more of his works. Nunzio works at the Lemont Park District and also as an online artist, and is learning HTML.

• Emma Potts, Senior, Social Studies

Emma Potts was cited as the Senior Student of the Month by the Social Studies Department. A high honor roll student, Potts has a wide range of academic interests, but has very much enjoyed her many social studies classes. A captain of the Speech Team and a National English Honor Society officer, she is a member of the World Language Club, Sign Language Club and Link Crew, and twice has served as an English Language Learners intern. Potts also is interning with American Councils as its National Security Language Initiative for Youth alumni representative. She combines her academic nature with hard work and dedication, which results in academic excellence and a genuine passion for learning. She serves as a model to other students as to how to appropriately behave, respectfully discuss, and enthusiastically engage with class material. LHS said Potts recently was awarded a scholarship through the prestigious QuestBridge “College Match” program, and will be attending Columbia University, where she plans on majoring in Political Science. Someday she hopes to work in the Department of State or with a non-government organization. As part of her interest in new cultures and to prepare for a career in diplomacy, Potts has learned Korean, Chinese and Sign Language.
