LHS Students Reach IHSA Journalism State Finals

LEMONT, IL - Two Lemont High School students have advanced to compete at the 2017 IHSA Journalism State Finals at Eastern Illinois University. Senior Heather Miller and junior Morgan Page will compete Friday, April 28 at the state finals.
According to a release, Miller was the IHSA Sectional titlist in the Advertising category, and will be making her second state finals appearance in as many years. In 2016, she became the first Lemont student to earn state medals in multiple events in the same year, and also became the second student in school history to win a state championship in journalism competition. She beat out more than 20 competitors to win the Editorial Writing category, and also placed sixth in Advertising.
Page will be making her state finals debut after placing first in Editorial Cartooning in sectional competition.

LHS said Miller and Page were part of a Lemont contingent that combined for five top-six finishes at the IHSA Naperville Central Sectional on April 22. This marks the eighth straight season that Lemont will send multiple students to the state finals.
Lemont’s Journalism advisor is Susan Szafranski, and its head Yearbook sponsor is Cara Franta.

The IHSA Journalism State Finals includes contests in 17 newspaper- and yearbook related categories, with students being asked to meet a different challenge in each competition. The top three finishers in each category from seven IHSA Sectionals advance to compete at the IHSA State Finals.
