Long-Time Lemont Emergency Management Agency Director Dies

Tom Ballard, long-time LEMA director, died Jan. 19 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

LEMONT, IL — Tom Ballard, longtime Director of the Lemont Emergency Management Agency and "a deeply respected figure throughout our community and across Illinois," has died, the Village of Lemont shared.

For more than 25 years, Tom devoted himself to the safety and well-being of Lemont’s residents, the Village said.

"His work touched nearly every aspect of public safety, from emergency response and disaster readiness to road closures, weather watching, traffic control, and major event logistics. Much of what he accomplished happened behind the scenes, yet his impact was felt by everyone who lived, worked and visited Lemont," the Village said.

In his work, Tom assisted communities throughout the state that needed additional support or that recovering from natural tragedies. The Village praised his "leadership, assuring presence, and unwavering commitment," stating it earned him admiration at every level.

"He poured his heart and soul into his work and had an unwavering ability to make people feel valued and supported," the Village said.

“Tom’s dedication to Lemont was extraordinary. He guided this community through daily operations and emergencies with confidence, compassion and a level of commitment that set the standard for public service. His presence brought reassurance in our most challenging moments, and his legacy will continue to shape our village for years to come,” said Mayor John Egofske.

According to his obituary, Tom was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in Vietnam. He was a life-long Cubs and Bears fan. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Rita.

Visitation will take place on Jan. 26, from 2-7 p.m. at Markiewicz Funeral Home, and on Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 10 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
