Flash Flood Watch, Multiple Rounds Of Storms Possible In Illinois

Rain is in the forecast for the Mother's Day weekend.

You may not be spending much time outside this Mother's Day weekend. According to the National Weather Service, this weekend will have cooler temperatures, rain and possibly severe storms. The rain and storms begin on Friday night, with the highest chances of storms across northern Illinois later Friday evening.

A flood watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Saturday through Sunday morning for Will, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy and Kane counties, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall in the forecast.

In addition to thunderstorms, hail up to the size of a half dollar is possible, according to the NWS.

Police remind residents that if you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and do not attempt to drive through it.

The greatest chance for severe storms lies in the southern suburbs of Chicago and near Kankakee. Storms are expected to roll in Saturday afternoon and evening. The chance for storms remains on Sunday, most likely in the morning. According to the NWS, Sunday will be slightly warmer, with a high of 68.

  • SATURDAY: Showers likely and possibly thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 58. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • SATURDAY NIGHT: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a low around 50. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
  • SUNDAY: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 68. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • SUNDAY NIGHT: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53.
  • MONDAY: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 79.
