Oakwood Students Honor Veterans

Over 70 special veterans in the lives of Oakwood first and second grade students joined the school in a tribute assembly.

LEMONT, IL — In celebration of Veterans Day, over 70 special veterans in the lives of Oakwood first and second grade students joined the school in a tribute assembly. The school said the purpose for gathering was to honor and appreciate the men and women who have served in the armed forces. The assembly was held at Oakwood School on Friday, Nov. 10.

Children learned a few songs in music class and sang them for the distinguished guests. The school said this year at Oakwood, to make Veterans Day more meaningful for the students, a twist was added to help them learn about this important holiday. Students participated in Breakout escape room activities. According to the school, Breakout brings to life the 4 C’s, which are critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.

The students engaged in learning games where players used teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open a locked box. Each of these clues led them into the Veterans Day assembly.
