Oakwood celebrated Veteran’s Day in unique and varied ways. Oakwood’s goal was to ensure that their young students understood the meaning behind the day.
Veteran’s Day Committee members Debbie Hessert and Erin Stahurski, in collaboration with classroom teachers and music teacher, Micah Brandhandler, spearheaded the celebration.

“Veteran’s Day has taken on a new significance here at Oakwood School as we discuss the value and bravery of our Veterans. Veteran’s day is no longer just another day off of school, but an important time to honor those who make our safe places possible,” Hessert said.
As a culminating event, Oakwood School held a Veteran’s assembly to honor, recognize, and celebrate Veterans who served our country. First and second grade students sang songs, recited poems, and shared a PowerPoint presentation highlighting activities that took place prior to Veteran’s Day.

Nearly 40 Veterans attended the assembly, with all five branches of the military being represented.
Once again we worked in tandem with Operation Care Package, a local organization whose mission is to ensure “no hero is forgotten”. As a special service project, families donated ingredients to make “Snowman Soup” bags for active troop members.
