Old Quarry Alum Gives Back On His Way to Eagle Scout Honors
A recent graduate of Old Quarry Middle School designed his Eagle Scout project to better the school.

Owen Doherty, Old Quarry Class of 2011, is currently completing the requirements needed to earn Eagle Scout Rank from the Boy Scouts of America. Owen, who is a member of Troup 49, chose to complete a signage project at Old Quarry Middle School as his Eagle Scout Project.
“I chose Old Quarry for my eagle project because I was in District 113A from first through eighth grade, and the middle school had really left an imprint on my life,” Owen said. “It was my favorite time in school and really helped me on my way into high school. The project was just my way of saying thanks to the school community for everything.”
Owen worked in collaboration with the school administration to design and install two directional signs on the campus of Old Quarry Middle School directing visitors to the administration wing of the building and the gymnasium.

“The project was more of a learning and growth experience than I expected. I have been in scouting almost my entire life because of the values and principles it represents. Scout values such as community service, personal responsibility, and hard work are principles that I believe lead to a happy and satisfying life. Working with Dr. Caron, the School Board, the leaders in Troop 49, and a group of great scouts, I saw firsthand the commitment people have to our community, and how this commitment not only builds a great community but great citizens,” states Doherty.
Dr. William Caron, Principal of Old Quarry Middle School stated that, “We were thrilled that Owen considered us for this project. Earning the Eagle Scout rank is one of the highest honors a young man can reach as a boy scout. It was an honor to be a part of helping Owen reach this goal and to have him come up with such a great project made us proud.”

The signs, which are located on the north and east side of the building, are designed of heavy duty vinyl composite and highlight the school colors. A school logo adorns the top of each sign and arrows direct visitors to each area of the building. District 113A updated the landscaping around the signs to complete the project.
