Old Quarry Seventh Graders Honor Cancer Awareness Month

The students researched organizations that help children with cancer.

In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Old Quarry seventh graders conducted and presented mini research projects about different organizations that aide children with cancer. They began by reading a narrative nonfiction article entitled “Unbroken: A Year In The Life of A Girl With Cancer” from our Language Arts Scope magazine. The article begins by telling the uplifting story of Lauren Bendesky and how she stayed positive when diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma as a teenager.

Students then explored themes of courage and resilience while demystifying cancer. In addition, the article brought on great discussion about how difficult experiences can make them stronger and what they can do to help people that are sick.

Students were then placed in groups and explored organizations such as St. Baldrick’s, Hyundai Hope On Wheels, and Make a Wish Foundation. After their research, students organized their information into posters and PowerPoint presentations to share with the class.

The students were truly inspired by Lauren and her optimistic attitude during such a difficult time. Next week, 7th grade will be given the opportunity to Skype with the now cancer survivor/St. Baldrick’s Foundation Ambassador/college student Lauren!
