Prescribed Burn Planned Tuesday At Lemont Township's Woodland Sanctuary

LEMONT, IL — A prescribed burn will be done at the Heritage Woodland Sanctuary on Tuesday, Lemont Township shared on its Facebook.

Pizzo & Associates will be completing the burn.

"Prescribed burning is a vital practice for maintaining the health and diversity of prairie ecosystems, helping to control invasive species, recycle nutrients, and promote the growth of native plants," the Township said.

The prescribed burns are usually done every 3 to 5 years.

"The timing of the burns (spring vs. fall) can influence the types of plants that flourish afterward," according to the Township. "Land managers carefully plan prescribed burns, considering factors such as weather conditions, the specific plant communities present, and the desired outcomes for the ecosystem. This planning is crucial to ensure that the burns are effective and do not harm sensitive wildlife populations."
