IL Rainfall Totals: Flood Warnings In Effect In Chicago Area

Most of the area saw between 2 and 4 inches of rain over the past two days.

ILLINOIS — The Chicago area has had two days of heavy rain and several flood warnings and flood advisories are in effect. According to the National Weather Service, warnings have been issued for several rivers, including Little Calumet River in South Holland; Des Plaines River in Riverside; Vermilion River near Leonore and Pontiac; Mazon River near Coal City; DuPage River near Plainfield and near Warrenville; Kankakee River near Momence; and Fox River near Algonquin

The NWS shared some official rainfall totals from Tuesday, and most of the area received nearly another inch of rain.

  • O'Hare, .63 inches
  • Midway, .7 inches
  • Romeoville, .79 inches
  • Rockford Airport, .83 inches
  • Sugar Grove, .72 inches
  • West Chicago, .56 inches

Monday was also the wettest day since September in Chicago. The NWS said O'Hare received 1.58 inches of rain, Romeoville had 1.5 inches, Aurora had 1.44 inches, and Rockford had 1.13 inches on Monday.

Most of the area received between 2 to 4 inches of rain over the past 48 hours, according to the NWS. The Joliet areas and south suburbs are in the 3 to 4 inch range while suburbs closer to Chicago received 2 to 3 inches.

It seems the rain will taper off today, but Thursday will feature another round of showers and storms, although there is less of a heavy rain threat.
