Scattered Thunderstorms, Brief Funnels Possible Tonight
Scattered thunderstorms will continue tonight, with a possibility for severe storms south of I-80.

CHICAGO, IL — Scattered thunderstorms will continue into the evening Tuesday, and the National Weather Service said there is a small chance for severe storms south of I-80. The NWS also said conditions are favorable for the development of isolated, brief funnel clouds, associated with rain over parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

According to a release, a couple of funnel clouds were reported in northwest Illinois earlier this afternoon. The NWS said the clouds, while ominous looking, normally protrude a few hundred feet downward from the parent cloud, rotate or spin like a top, and last a few minutes before dissipating.
These funnel clouds rarely touch the ground, according to a release. The atmospheric conditions these funnels are developing in do not support strong, damaging tornadoes. However, on very rare occasions these funnels can briefly touch the ground and produce very minimal, if any damage.
