Scouting Adventures Begin Again

Troop 149 has many activities lined up for the fall. In August, they took a day-long canoe trip down the Rock River near Oregon, Illinois. In September, the Troop will camp in Wisconsin and will ride along the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, and the following month, they will camp at Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center and participate in team building on a low and high ropes course. Scouts will earn service hours as they support upcoming Eagle Scout Projects. At regular Troop meetings, Scouts will work on rank advancements and build scout skills together as patrols.

Troop 149 had an active summer. In June, two crews of Scouts and adult leaders went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico where they spent twelve days backpacking in the mountains. The highlight of their trip was hiking to the top of Mount Baldy at 12,441 feet. Over their trek, they hiked a total of 130 miles. In July, Scouts also had the opportunity to attend summer camp at Owasippe Scout Reservation in Michigan. Scouts could earn merit badges in water sports, swimming, shotgun shooting, archery, wilderness survival, robotics, photography, environmental science, game design, first aid, geocaching, and so much more.

Over the past few months, Troop 149 has also had several Scouts complete projects to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Two Scouts, Harrison Nowakowski and Michael Swanson, led the troop in building birdhouses and bee hotels (insect habitats), respectively, for the Lemont Heritage Quarries Recreation Area. Brenden Malone worked with the Lemont Township to repair and secure fencing at the Lemont Dog Park.

The start of the program year is a great time to join Scouts! Troop 149 is open to boys aged 11-17. There are additional Scouting opportunities for girls and children under 11. For more information on Troop 149, please visit our website: troop149lemont.org.
