Tornado, Hail Risk Amid Threat Of Severe Storms In Illinois

If storms develop, the NWS said large hail and an isolated tornado are the main threats.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS — Storms will roll into the area Wednesday evening, and the National Weather Service is monitoring the potential for a few strong to severe storms. The NWS said storms will develop between 5 to 10 p.m., primarily for locations northwest of a Dixon to Crystal Lake line.

According to the NWS, there is a significant thunderstorm risk, a limited tornado risk, an elevated hail risk and an elevated damaging wind risk. If storms develop, the NWS said large hail and an isolated tornado would be the main threats.

The Chicago metro area has a chance of storms after 10 p.m., with some rain likely, the NWS said.

Another area of thunderstorms may also move northeast into the region late Wednesday evening and overnight. The NWS said there is a low potential for strong and gusty winds and small hail with these storms with the main threat for towns along and south of I-80.

The approximate timing for severe storm potential south of I-80 is between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
