Freezing Rain, Snow Hits Chicago Area

Light snow will continue through the overnight hours into Monday, and a special weather statement is in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, snow will end from west to east during the overnight hours. Snow accumulations will range from under 1 inch to the south part of Chicagoland to 2 to 4 inches to the north.

"For areas along and north of I-80 into this evening, this is expected to remain as occasional snow with additional minor accumulation," the Nation Weather Service said. "Still, patchy slick spots will continue, so allow extra travel time. Patchy slick conditions are expected to linger south of I-80 as well where a wintry mix may result for much of this evening."

Tuesday during the day should remain dry, and there is a high of 33 degrees. There is a chance of snow after midnight Tuesday night and a wintry mix is possible Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Snow mixed with freezing rain is possible Wednesday morning and snow mixed with rain is possible in the afternoon, the NWS said. Thursday and Friday should be dry, with a high of 37 on Thursday and a high of 42 on Friday.

• MONDAY: A 40 percent chance of snow showers before 9 a.m. Cloudy, with a high near 29. North wind 5 to 10 mph.
• MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. North northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
• TUESDAY: Partly sunny, with a high near 31. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon.
• TUESDAY NIGHT: Snow after midnight. Low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
• WEDNESDAY: Snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain before 11 a.m., then snow, possibly mixed with rain. High near 36. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
• WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25.
• THURSDAY: Partly sunny, with a high near 34.
• THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.
• FRIDAY: Mostly sunny, with a high near 38.
• FRIDAY NIGHT: A chance of snow. Partly cloudy, with a low around 27.
