SS. Cyril & Methodius School Welcomes New Principal, Mr. Dan Turney

(LEMONT, IL) – SS. Cyril & Methodius School is proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Daniel Turney as its new principal, effective July 1, 2025. Mr. Turney brings over 20 years of experience as an educator, administrator, and faith-based leader in Catholic schools throughout the Chicagoland area.

He succeeds longtime principal Mrs. Shirley Tkachuk, who retired after 19 years of dedicated service to the school community.

“After an exhaustive search, we are thrilled to welcome Mr. Turney to the SSCM family,” said School Board President and SSCM alumnus Joe Martello. “Dan brings with him a strong track record of success and a deep commitment to data-driven improvement. His focus on continuous growth, combined with his approachable nature and genuine passion for education, make him a perfect fit for SSCM.”

Mr. Turney most recently served as principal of Most Holy Redeemer School in Evergreen Park, where he led initiatives in curriculum innovation, faculty development, and strategic growth. His previous leadership roles include Vice Principal at Mother McAuley High School and Assistant Principal for Curriculum at St. Laurence High School. He holds a B.A. in English/Secondary Education from Marquette University and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education, with additional leadership training through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Principal Academy.

He and his wife, Kathleen, live in Oak Lawn with their three children—Adelaide, Eleanor, and Timothy.

“One of my root beliefs is that transformative leaders ‘honor tradition while embracing strategic development,’” said Mr. Turney, who was drawn to SSCM’s unique spirit and its close connection to SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish. “From my first visit, I could tell SS. Cyril & Methodius is a place where students are known, supported, and challenged to grow. It has a strong sense of purpose, a deep connection to the parish and families, and a clear commitment to forming the whole child—spiritually, academically, and socially. I feel truly called to serve here.”

Mr. Turney’s goals for the year ahead include strengthening the school’s close-knit community, growing enrollment, and expanding enrichment opportunities. “As a National Blue Ribbon School, SSCM has so much to offer,” he said. “I want to ensure each student is challenged and supported to reach their full potential.”

Having spent the summer meeting with students, families, and staff, Mr. Turney is especially eager to take part in beloved school traditions. “From our spring play to the faith partners program and the Thanksgiving feast, it’s clear SSCM is a place where memories are made and community shines,” he said. “And yes—I'm also looking forward to seeing who wins our 2025 Riptide Blue Corvette at this year’s carnival.
