When Should You Start Preparing for a New School Year?

Summer is a wonderful time for families to relax, travel, and make lasting memories. But as the new school year approaches, a little preparation can make the transition back to the classroom much smoother for both children and parents.

A good rule of thumb is to begin preparing about two weeks before school starts. This gives children enough time to ease back into routines without cutting their summer short.

Start by gradually moving bedtime and wake-up times closer to the school schedule. Re-establishing healthy sleep habits before the first day helps children arrive at school rested, focused, and ready to learn.

Next, encourage daily reading and practice basic academic skills. Younger children can enjoy reading together with a parent, while older students can spend 20–30 minutes each day reading a book of their choice or reviewing math facts. The goal isn't to "teach school" at home, but to refresh their minds after the summer break.

This is also a great time to organize school supplies, try on uniforms or school clothes, and talk positively about the upcoming year. Discuss new opportunities, reconnect with friends, and set goals for the year ahead. Children often mirror their parents' attitudes, so your enthusiasm and encouragement can help build their confidence.

Finally, remember that preparation extends beyond academics. Pray together as a family for a successful school year, asking God to bless your child's teachers, classmates, and all those who make your school community special.
