Bitter Cold: Dangerous Wind Chill, Snow In Illinois Forecast

Cold temperatures will stick around the rest of the week for Illinois.

Illinois is experiencing some of the coldest temperatures of the season on Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, a wind chill advisory is in effect for some northern counties, including Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, DeKalb and Kane.

The National Weather Service warned that cold wind chills can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. The coldest conditions on Tuesday will be north of I-88 until noon today.

According to the National Weather Service, the frigid temperatures will stick around for the rest of the week, as well as a chance for snow at the end of the week.

As of Tuesday morning, according to the NWS, current wind chill was below zero in many suburbs. At Chicago-O'Hare, the wind chill was -17, in DeKalb it was -22 and it was -11 in Joliet.

Later in the week, you can expect some snow. According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance for snow on Thursday and Friday, but amounts are uncertain at this time.

  • TUESDAY: Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 8. Wind chill values as low as -14. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
  • TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear, with a low around -4. Wind chill values as low as -19. Northwest wind around 10 mph.
  • WEDNESDAY: Sunny and cold, with a high near 9. Wind chill values as low as -17. Northwest wind around 5 mph.
  • WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds, with a low around 3. North northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
  • THURSDAY: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 17. South wind around 5 mph.
  • THURSDAY NIGHT: A 30 percent chance of snow before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.
  • FRIDAY: A 20 percent chance of snow after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17.
  • FRIDAY NIGHT: A chance of snow, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5.
