Woodland Sanctuary Volunteers Plant More Than 200 Native Plants Despite Rain Delays

LEMONT TOWNSHIP, IL – Determination, teamwork, and a break in the weather on Saturday, September 19, helped volunteers accomplish a major planting effort this week as more than 200 native plant plugs were successfully installed in the Butterfly Garden and the Garden Club’s Native Triangle planting area.

Despite intermittent rain throughout the day, volunteers adjusted their schedule and took advantage of a brief window of favorable weather to complete the project. The planting effort represents a significant step forward in enhancing local pollinator habitats and native landscape areas.

Organizers praised the group’s accomplishments and recognized several individuals for their contributions. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Bill Cross, whose efforts transformed the fireplace area through extensive cleanup work.

“Getting more than 200 plugs planted in a single day is no small feat,” organizers noted. “Everyone’s flexibility and hard work made the day a success.”

The successful planting project continues ongoing efforts to improve the community’s gardens while supporting native plants and the wildlife that depend on them.

Nature Walk Rescheduled for October 17

The planned Nature Walk has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. In addition to exploring the area’s natural features, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a seed-harvesting activity.

Community members who plan to attend are encouraged to update their calendars and watch for additional announcements regarding this event.

Memorial Dedications to Follow

Following the Nature Walk activities, the Lemont Township will host two special memorial dedications beginning at 11:00 a.m. on October 17:

• Barb Buschman Memorial Garden Dedication
• Steve Rosendahl Tree Dedication

The memorial events will provide an opportunity for residents, volunteers, and friends to honor the lasting contributions of both individuals to the community.

Organizers encourage anyone able to attend to join them in recognizing these meaningful additions to the township landscape and celebrating the memories of those being honored.

The recent planting success, upcoming Nature Walk, and memorial dedications reflect the community’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship, conservation, and honoring those who have helped shape local open spaces.
