65 Percent Of Lake County Coronavirus Deaths Are In Nursing Homes

LAKE COUNTY, IL — At least 65 percent of those dying from the new coronavirus in Lake County are residents of long-term care facilities, according to updated data from the public health officials. As of Wednesday afternoon, 80 of the county's 210 COVID-19 deaths were residents of nursing homes.

But, the local health department only reports deaths in long-term care facilities that have more than two cases so that number could be higher, according to health department data. As of Wednesday, 32 long-term care facilities had residents who've tested positive for the virus with a total of 557 cases.

Nursing home residents are especially vulnerable to contracting and dying from the virus since they are living in a congregate setting, where the virus can easily spread, and since the virus is more likely to seriously sicken or kill those ages 60 years old and older and those with other serious health conditions, including diabetes and respiratory illnesses.

On Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health shared its weekly update on how many cases and deaths had been reported at facilities with two or more reported cases throughout the county:
