A Twisted Spine : Scoliosis Treatment

“Not all curves are bad…. A smile is a curve that sets everything straight!”

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine of more then 10 degrees.  It can develop at any age, but is most common in adolescent girls.  Scoliosis affects nearly 6 million individuals in the United States alone.

In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown.  Other possible causes are trauma, tumors, neurological diseases and leg-length inequality just to name a few.  Regardless of the cause, there are non-surgical solutions to improving a scoliosis curve.

Evaluation for scoliosis like most conditions begins with a history and physical exam including a postural analysis.  Pending on the severity of the curve, these procedures may not detect scoliosis.  Significant curves will require x-ray evaluation to determine the location and degree of the scoliosis.

Once it has been determined that a scoliosis is present, there are three major courses of conservative care – observation, bracing, and chiropractic care.  Surgery is often only an option if the curve is greater then 45 degrees, rapidly progressing and/or affecting function of your vital organs.

I would highly recommend that anyone who has a scoliosis seek chiropractic treatment.  Chiropractic care has been known to help stabilize and in some cases decrease the degree of the scoliosis.  Chiropractors are trained in the analysis and treatment of scoliosis and they are your best option in conservative care.  Chiropractors use therapeutic exercise, spinal manipulation and other rehab modalities to stabilize the curve as well as reduce pain that is associated with scoliosis.

The earlier a scoliosis is detected, the greater chance for improvement of the curve.  All teens and adolescents should have a postural screening for scoliosis and other structural abnormalities.  If you or someone you know is suffering from scoliosis or any type of back pain refer them to a chiropractor you trust for evaluation.

There are some great websites and blogs dedicated to connect and inform those suffering with scoliosis.  I especially loved this blog about a ballerina dedicating her life to improving the treatment of scoliosis.  Do you have a story about scoliosis or a great resource for readers?  Share it in the comments!
