Advocate Condell Trauma Team Joins Together for Trauma Day 2019
Damage Control Orthopedics Highlights Decision-Making and Teamwork in Level 1 Trauma Care

Gregory Caronis, M.D., Chief of Surgery at Advocate Condell Medical Center, joined with his trauma colleagues on Friday, talking with over 100 area high school students attending Trauma Day 2019 at Advocate Condell Medical Center. The annual event kicks off National Trauma Month in May designed to raise trauma awareness and focus on injury prevention.
Dr. Caronis shared the “damage control” orthopedic techniques that he brings to the trauma team – working to treat orthopedic trauma in a manner that addresses immediate life-threatening injuries and stabilizes those that can be treated once trauma-related inflammation and shock to the system has somewhat abated. A significant part of his leadership role within the hospital is to ensure that surgical services are well-coordinated and that resources are available to allow for optimal function of the trauma team and expedient care of life-threatening traumatic injuries.
“The most rewarding part of the day for me,” said Dr. Caronis, “was looking up and seeing a former patient in attendance.” He explained that a return to mobility and function is the ultimate goal of orthopedic trauma surgery. Reflecting on the day, Dr. Caronis stated, “Advocate Condell Medical Center should be congratulated for sponsoring such an outstanding public education effort.”
